Rob Cowles, 1965 Sport Fury






I bought my car from a guy here in Vancouver, WA. I have been looking for a ride for about a year before I found this one.

My wife and I were coming out of the parking lot at a Safeway and I wasn’t even paying attention. She said, “Hey isn’t that a Mopar over there?” We made a quick U-turn to go check it out. It was kind of dark out but it was parked under a streetlight so we could see it pretty well. When we pulled up I found it to be a 65 Plymouth Sport Fury with kind of a pinkish / purple colored paint job, front end slammed just right with Centerline Wheels tucked neatly under paint matching fender skirts. SWEEEEET!

The owner just happened to be sitting in the car waiting for his girlfriend to come out of the store. I asked him what color it was and from there I ended up talking to him for about 1 hour. (Ask Chris if this guy can talk!) He told me it was a Mopar color called “Lilac” with a pearl coat. (Any info or paint codes for this color would be helpful). We walked around to the front to lift the hood to check out the goods and there it was, right there in the front window, a FOR SALE sign. I couldn’t believe it. A sign from God, I later told my wife. Anyway, when he lifted the hood he showed me a Chrysler 400 Big block with a 4-bbl carb. It was originally a 383 car but he had rebuilt a 400 and put it in instead. The engine compartment was so clean you could eat off of it. It also has a 727 Trans and a 3 speed auto on the center console. Speaking of center console the interior on this car is Cherry. It looks brand new. It came with a factory tach that goes in the center console but didn’t work at the time (more on that later). Factory working electric seats, factory tilt wheel.

I finished my conversation with my new friend and got in the car where my “patient” wife was waiting. NOT! After she complimented me on my ability to carry on a brief conversation, I ever so politely reminded her that she was the one that was kind enough point out the vehicle in question. I then immediately called my best friend in the whole world / Mopar expert / godfather of my children and founder of GodsRods.com, Chris Jones.

He said, “Hello” and I said, “Dude…I found it! You have to check this car out with me.” To make the long story longer I needed some other opinions so Chris and our friend Jim both fit me into their busy schedule and we went out to this guy’s house the next Saturday. (I didn’t tell Chris or Jim how much this guy liked to talk because I wanted them to go with me.) (And if the guy that I bought the car from is reading this, I’m sorry dude but you do talk a lot.)

As expected, the car was killer looking in the daylight too, at least Chris and I thought so. Jim said to me with a blank stare and a pause, “…You like this? I like my Road Runner a lot better.” Oh well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. So we left Jim with the guy to talk for a little bit while we took a test spin.
When we returned we found Jim ever so intrigued with the conversation that he was carrying with another car enthusiast. When they finished discussing the cost of tea in China, I negotiated what I thought was a great deal and I went home to think about it. I prayed about it and talked to my wife a lot about it until I was convinced I needed this car. I called the guy back about a week later and Chris reluctantly went with me again to buy it.
I have since had the tach rebuilt by a great company in California, United Speedometer Service. (Check them out @ www.speedometershop.com) They had it rebuilt, sand blasted, repainted and detailed in about 2 weeks and they did a great job. I then installed it along with a new coil and it works perfect. I have also installed a Lokar kick down and throttle cable assembly which combined allows my second gear scratches!! I have done some minor electrical work and am ready to install a new gauge set soon. My future goal for the car is to drop in a blown 440 with a polished hood scoop and paint matching butterfly scoop flapper thingys.

One final thought about my life to ponder: The memories of my family outings are still a source of strength to me. I remember we'd all pile into the car- I forget what kind it was- and drive and drive. I'm not sure where we'd go, but I think there were some trees there. The smell of something was strong in the air as we played whatever sport we played. I remember a bigger, old guy we called "Dad". We'd eat some stuff, or not, and then I think we went home. I guess some things never leave you.
